CBC's right to have your name

Today over at the CBC election blog, Jacques makes the case for why CBC insists on having your first and last name and where you live before posting a comment.

The argument makes perfect sense for CBC's traditional media of radio and television. They're interviewing people and putting them in stories so the listener or viewer needs to know where the person is coming from so they can understand the story in the proper context.

What CBC, and by extension, Jacques Poitras don't seem to understand is that a blog isn't a news story.

A blog is opinion. People who leave comments aren't being interviewed and I would suspect by and large they're not interested in being interviewed. It's an open discussion much like you would have at the Tim Hortons in your local neighbourhood. It is not a one-way street. It's a new medium and a new way of thinking, but one CBC should adopt. Now in fairness at least CBC has a quasi-blog about the New Brunswick election. That is more than any other media has. Jacques also provides a link here to Spink About It and to Atlantic Blogger where this issue is also being discussed, so that readers at CBC can check out the opposing views. That is commendable.

However, if CBC won't enter 2006, I'll help them out. As I've been doing for the past several days, I'm putting up links to new postings on Jacques blog and commentary. For those of you who are new here and don't want to leave your name at the CBC, leave your comment about what Jacques is writing about here. Jacques obviously stops by so your message will get through, even if CBC doesn't want it too. Those are the CBC's rules. They don't have to be yours.

Spink, is there a way to contact Jacques other than on the blog?

Drop him an e-mail Alvy at jacques_poitras@cbc.ca although in fairness to Jacques, I think his hands are tied. This is the CBC in all of its bureaucratic, quasi-government wisdom not understanding what a blog is.

By the way, anyone who doubts the potential power and influence of blogs should think about this. Our little discussion here has sparked an entire column on the CBC election blog. Keep up the good work gang.

I totally agree, Spink.

I suspect that he/they are bound by an old policy that was not designed with blogs in mind.

I just wanted to thank him for the link/mention regarding my little foray into "We didn't start the fire".

Spinks,

I would like to see your 2006 NB Election predictions....I think NB Politico still has some maturing to do....He's definitely not a neutral!!!!

hehe, NB Politico is a partisan Liberal, no question about it. :)

Personally I'm leaving my predictions until a bit closer to election day.......a bit early in the race for predictions IMO. What about you Spinks? Do we get em from you now or later?? :D

During the 2006 federal election, the CBC blog did not even allow comments, however, the CTV blog allowed anonymous and nicknamed comments by the dozens. I fail to see the CBC's logic here? With a boardroom who comes up with policies and regulations like that, it is no wonder they are losing viewers and readership.

Methinks that this public institution has lost touch with the general public who pays for their ultimate existance.

You're right PNB. How can one make a proper assessment when there haven't even been any gaffes yet. In the end, you just end up constantly changing your predictions as NB politico has already done.

Btw, I've been around this shit for a longtime, and I noticed NB politico refering to polls done in certain ridings. What poll? He must be very close to the insiders in the liberal war room to get their internal polling on specific ridings? As you know, and I know, there is only a couple of polling shacks in NB who poll for the election so other than that he is either guessing or he has insider info. I can't believe no one called him on that yet. LOL

This struck me as curious, because I find it difficult to believe any party in NB has the cash to run polls at the riding level with a big enough sample to mean anything. So I went over to nbpolitico's blog, and I think Scott misunderstands him.

It seems clear that the polls of which nbpolitico writes were in the 2003 election. Each electoral district or "riding" is divided up into smallish "polls", each of which has its own ballot box, returning officer and party scrutineers. Scott must know all this, since he says he's "been around this shit for a longtime", so he must just be misunderstanding nbp.

As I mentioned before, and i think PNB touched on it, your analysis is worthless if you are not using up-to-date polling data, especially given the fact that polling data obtained this very day, TODAY, will be only referred to for fluctuations and trends, not for what will go down on the 18th. IMO, that is why trying to predict by using old data will send you on a wild goose chase just driving by...I mean NB politico!!

nbpolitico is a partisan Liberal but you know something, he/she doesn't deny it. Their affiliation is obvious in the writings. I suspect our friend may even be a campaign worker for the Liberals or at the very least has inside information but who cares?

nbpolitico isn't trying to hide the Liberal leanings and I've found most of the postings there realistic and well thought out. There are lots of Liberal sites (granted many of the comments at nbpolitico are like this) where it's just a bashing of Bernard Lord and predictions that the Tories are going to lose every seat. nbpolitico doesn't do that.

I've added nbpolitico to my links because it's a different point of view that's well thought out. All the more power to him/her.

PNB, predictions are virtually impossible in this province but I can take a stab in a few days with the caveat that I'll probably change them later. Two predictions though right now. It will be a tight race and two leaders quit election night or very shortly thereafter.

Spinks,

FWIW, I agree that whichever of Lord or Graham loses will quit. (They'll know they have little choice but to quit or face constant attack from within.)

Not sure Brewer will quit. First of all, no one expects her to win anything. No one. Not even one seat. She's not even expected to maintain the NDP pop vote from last time, or even close.

Plus, the NDP does not have any prospects to replace her. Any and all semi-serious candidates were approached last time, and passes.

So, I think she gets a free pass, no matter how poorly the NDP does on September 18. Unless she needs to take a paying job to pay the bills, which I guess is possible because I doubt the NDP can afford to pay her much, I think she'll stick around.

I'm no expert or and I have no inside knowledge. Just a fellow political junkie.

Spinks, it is good that you keep yourself linked with CBC and Jacque Poitras. However, your current write up leaves the impression that he wants open-ended discussion and anonymous comments. Do not get him fired:):). As management may think he is going against them.

You say they don't deny their political affiliation, but I wasn't born yesterday Spinks, saying your going on vacation and then travelling around the province talking to people and analyzing signs, old polling data, riding HQs and candidates get togethers are two different things...that's not a vacation in my books! So why say it is?? And therefore, the fact that this blog tried to hide that very fact makes it very suspect, in my books, regardless if it is accurate or engaging.

Stay tuned, as I guarantee that blog (NB Politico) will ultimately turn into a Lord smearing section after the holiday. Let's just say i beat everyone to that comclusion. LOL Not that there's anything wrong with that.

Just driving, the NDP's prospects are pretty slim aren't they? As much as I don't care for her, Brewer was the best pick of the motley crew they had running for leader. Unless Ralph Thomas runs for leader (at least he probably would have won his seat), I don't see anyone waiting in the wings.

Anon 5:05, if my blog get Poitras fired, then CBC is worse than I even thought. I don't think he has any worries. Look at it this way I'm keeping them on their toes and frankly I find it hard to believe he completly agrees with their policy anyway. If he did, the CBC Union blog wouldn't have allowed not only nicknames to comment last year but anons as well. Anyway, he's an employee and has to follow the party line so as I've written I don't blame him for this one anyway. I blame CBC. Poitras has actually impressed me with his take on all this. If he keeps it up, he might not come anywhere near next year's list of 10 people screwing up New Brunswick. :)

Scott, your conspiracy theories are getting worse than mine. LOL. Maybe you're right but the blog as partsan as it has been has been okay in my book at least up until now.

Yeah harrap, you never know what's going to show up. Federal Liberals advertising with Spinks. Ah, the irony. An Andy Scott ad would still be the creme de la creme.

Charles, Brent's always moderated the comments. In fact he used to not even allow comments so that's a step forward. Nothing wrong with moderating in my book, although the downside is the time delay. Not allowing nicknames is another matter. Frankly Charles I was surprised you jumped in bed with CBC so quickly on that point on Jacques' blog. I don't think there would be too many comments on your blog if you only allowed those who leave first and last names and where they live. You wouldn't have me, would you? :)

I have just posted this on the CBC blog.

My argument summary.

I have used a gmail account to make this post. The gmail address does not identify me at all. I have chosen a name that sounds reasonable.

I'm assuming you will post my comment as long as I am not using inappropriate language.

Am I real or am I fake?

This is the crux of what is wrong with the policy at the CBC

I can get a fake webmail account and use a fake name and post a comment here.

I'm still anonymous but I have taken a couple of extra steps to try to circumvent the process and make me sound real.

It's a blog.

Try and put that genie back in the bottle CBC.
